Up and down we go!

Like bass, pollack are very popular with anglers. It offers great sport, going for live bait just as eagerly as lures. And once the hook is set it puts up a fight and a half. It is usually found inshore but bigger specimen are caught farther out. On the open sea it is not uncommon to find pollack schooling around reef edges or wrecks, with some reaching or exceeding a meter in length. In these conditions, baitcasting reels produce best results. They offer better control when lowering the lure, more comfortable handing and often make for a lighter tackle – turning the rod into a winch!

Ahead of the curve

Several lures and lure actions lend themselves to vertical jigging for pollack. Soft plastics and metal lures work equally well across the entire jigging range of motion, from rap to slow pitch. In all cases you’ll want a short rod with a good bend. This makes it less tiring to work the lure and fight the fish for long periods of time, reduces lost bites and eases the fish into the strike. The rod must be flexible but have enough backbone to quickly snap bask into place so as to pitch the lure and tire the fish on the ascent. We chose three blanks for jigging techniques that are the similar but different:

  1. The NFC SJ 604 SM : 1.82 m 30–100 g is fun and very versatile. It can slow jig lures a bit over 100 g but lacks the backbone to keep it steady.
  2. The Rainshadow RDR70M : 2.13 m 50–150 g is ideal for pitching jigs and can be shortened to 1.98 m at the rear grip. The blank specification sheet contains a rig example.
  3. The NFC SJ 606 SM has all the versatility of its baby brother the 604 SM but with more power to cast and reel heavier lures.
