A lighter touch for a change

In summer when the water is warm, the small fry come up to the surface to cool off and feed on debris from trees. What at first seems an idyllic scene quickly turns into an all-you-can-eat buffet for perch and chub. And great sport for the angler! After all, having your prey in sight, casting your line into the churn and seeing the bite before you feel it is a bag of fun!

Light and flexible

Topwater fishing lends itself to several types of lures but really only one blank action. Lures include small 3–4 cm stickbaits weighing a couple of grams, flies, small poppers and micro jigs. In all cases you’ll want a blank that’s nice and flexible and heavy enough to "self-load" so that it can properly cast a light and somewhat ungainly fly far enough to keep you out of sight of the fish. You can fish just as well on the surface of an open stretch of water, where a long blank comes into its own, or a more crowded space, where a shorter blank is handy to negotiate the greenery. Sensitivity matters less than for other kinds of fishing because a bite is seen before it’s felt, but flexibility is important to avoid unhooking your catch, a not uncommon occurrence.
- The Rainshadow IMPP-70UL 2.13 m 1-5 g is the longest of the three blanks on offer here and made for topwater fishing. It has a moderate, pliant action and self-loading capacity no matter the weight of the lure. It is definitely the best blank to cast Illex/Jackal Woodlice – not the lightest or most aerodynamic bait but one that chub just can’t resist. It also handles small poppers and micro jigs well, giving them flight and making them dance. - The NFC MB-661-HM 1.98 m 2–7 g has a fantastic action with a very flexible tip and evenly distributes the load all the way to the rear grip for a rod that can take on the biggest and meanest perch or chub. What’s more, it is small enough to cast anywhere. The shortest of the lot, the Rainshadow IMMWS-62L 1.82 m 1–7 g is made for tight spaces and has a snappier action. Being faster, it handles woodlice less smoothly but performs well with small stickbaits and excels at micro jigs: a very versatile blank.
