The biggest, the most powerful...

In recent years, tuna has made a big comeback on the western side of Europe. Now, from the beginning of August, it is not uncommon to see 200kg monsters chasing a ball of anchovies in a pack, causing a real Jacuzzi. Of course, trolling tackle is much more suitable for reeling in a 200kg tuna comfortably, but the pleasure of a popper attack is far superior to a live start. Before talking about equipment, it should be remembered that a good physical condition is necessary before embarking on these real sporting events which can be like a mix between MMA fighting and a marathon.

Why a 130lb blank can be more powerful than a 300lb rod...

The boom in this market has seen the emergence of 200-250-300-400lb rods. Honestly, that doesn't mean anything any more because everyone says what they want without having to justify themselves.  In exotic fishing, there are known and recognised line classes: 50-80 and 130lb. The purpose of these classes is to validate records and above all to give a true idea of the power of the rod. By dividing this power by 3, we obtain the weight of the blank in kilos with which you can fish comfortably. For example, an 80lb blank (36kg) will fish well with 12kg of drag. To boost power, some brands have replaced this line class with the "Target Fish". So you end up with rods called 250lb, but only with a maximum drag of 15kg at 45 degrees! Some brands recognise the concept of 'Target Fish', others leave it vague. In the end, you'll find 130lb rods that are more powerful than 250 or 300lb rods. The most precise concept to remember is the maximum braking power that the rod can withstand at 45 degrees.

To reel in these big bluefin tuna, the blank needs to be solid, forgiving, progressive, have plenty of lifting power and, if possible, be 'light'. When fishing with PE10 braid, the power range is not really a factor because to "carry" a PE10 braid (0.55mm) at a good distance, you need to cast at least 60g (better still 80g), whatever the rod. To cast smaller lures (45g) correctly, you need to go down to PE 8.

  1. Black Hole Giant 7": 2m13, 200lb: Like its little brother the Giant 6", this 7" blank was originally designed for trolling. It also proves to be a formidable spinning rod for record fish. It's the heaviest of the three blanks selected, but it's also the most forgiving and comfortable. If you want to comfortably reel in a tuna weighing over 100kg with a Black Magic harness, look no further than this blank. Because of its length and weight, it's best suited to soft lure fishing but by extending the bubble trail from the popper to the reel, you can popping...
  2. Black Hole Cow Special Gen 2 : 2m13, class 130lb. The Cow is lighter, more supple at the tip and therefore more comfortable to cast than the Giant 7". When you're casting all day, you can really feel the difference. In combat, it's also a monster of power. It has a 'hard point' in the middle of the blank that gives it great lifting power. If you're looking for a fast way to get over 50kg cows and release them in the best possible conditions, you can trust this lure.
