Vertical fishing with metal lures

Slow jigging is practised all over the world and allows you to hit all the fish that respond to metal lures. The principle is to use gliding jigs with one side lighter than the other. On the way down, the slow jig sinks like a dead leaf. The animation consists of touching the bottom, then reeling in the lure in phases of descent of varying length. This slow action is the opposite of speed jigging and is therefore much less tiring.

Blanks to make jigs fly smoothly

The blanks used for slow jigging are generally 6.6 feet (1m98) long. They are therefore longer than speed jigging blanks. Slow jig blanks are not very tapered and have a progressive action. They have enough nerve to be effective in animation and to tire the fish in the fight. The curves obtained are very pleasant and it is rare to unhook fish with slow jigging rods. Very fine braids are used to keep the lures vertical and not to restrict their swimming action on the way down. As a result, you'll often find yourself hooked up to some beautiful fish on very fine tackle. Slow jigging is ideal for casting for a number of reasons: better control of the lure on the way down, more linear retrieve, ease of handling, reel reliability, etc... The power of the blank depends on the weight of the lures used and the fish in the area. Here is a selection of three blanks of different powers to cope with different fish. We are deliberately not quoting blanks over 50lb, as anything over this is very specific and you need to refer to an exotic configuration.

  1. NFC SLJ 661-1 X-Ray : 1m98, 80-200g. This is the right power for slow jigs and very slow action. If you're using soft lures, you're looking at 50-150g.  This is a super-fine, resonant blank that offers a lot of fun in a fight. Perfect for fishing between 20 and 45m depth.
  2. Rainshadow REVSJ66M : 1m98, 100-200g. An aesthetically pleasing blank thanks to the carbon X-Wrap. In use it proves to be as resonant as it is comfortable. The power is well estimated and will also work between 70 and 250g. It is ideally suited to speck fishing at depths of between 30 and 60 metres.
  3. Black Hole Slow Pitch 662-HMF : 90-350g, 1+1 butt joint: When the American brand announces a power of 40lb, you have to understand that this blank is very powerful!  It is capable of reeling in amberjacks and small tuna. Ideal for very deep areas where large pelagic fish roam.
