The lure of distant gobbles

Fly fishing on large rivers has its own special charms. Waist-deep in water on the great smooth rivers of the Dordogne, Allier or Ain, in the evening light, when a few discreet gobbles signal the start of the evening's catch, you're far from the world... The big river is the reign of late-season Grayling, caught far away on tiny Dry flies. But the water that stretches away also sometimes conceals monsters that we chase as drowning fish, big fish whose brutal touch we hope will pull the silk between our fingers. In the middle of the water, the angler is sometimes lost in a dream... However, fly fishing large rivers presents specific difficulties, the most important of which are the need to fish relatively far away, to use very long leaders, and to reposition the line (mends) at a distance. Another parameter to be taken into account is the frequent need to advance far into the river, and therefore to fish with water up to the belly. Start configuration

Matching blanks

To meet all the requirements of the big river, several strategies are possible from the rod's point of view. First of all, the familiarity that most anglers have with 9' rods can be favoured, and this is in fact what most anglers use. But more often than not, you'll want to go for the longer blanks, which offer some technical advantages in line control that some consider decisive. We have selected three blanks that cover most of the possible strategic choices.

  1. NFC FAF905-4 At 2.75 m, a 9' rod is both easy to handle and facilitates precise fly tying. And it's clearly the most familiar format for most of us. The NFC FAF series represents a feat of high-performance blank construction on a tight budget. The result is lightness combined with a considerable reserve of power, making this rod extremely easy to control. A perfect blank for sending a dry fly a long way, with a fast whip and plenty of punch, but no less at ease if you need to finesse a midge at 6m.
  2. NFC FAF 1005-4 10' Blanks are the standard solution for big river fishing, and for many reasons. The first is undoubtedly that the length makes long casts a little easier. It's also an advantage when you've gone a long way out and are whipping with water up to your belly: the length makes it easier to hold the silk in the air. Of course, a long rod is preferable for repositioning the line during mending. A long lever arm is also an advantage when you need to strike from a distance. While the advantages of a 10-foot rod often have to be offset by a lot of inertia that makes rod control difficult, this is not the case with NFC's FAF series. Light and very powerful, the 1005 has the finely balanced directionality and authority that are characteristic of FAFs. A reference for all subtle distance fishing.
  3. Rodbuilders' Republic FP1006-4 The Fly Patrol 1006 takes all the advantages of the 10' blanks mentioned for the FAF 1005 and represents a more powerful approach to big river fishing. Capable of finesse and lightness when needed, with a floating wf6 and a long leader for example, this blank will allow you to attack Grayling gobbles from a distance, with excellent drift control. It will also allow you to easily move up a Silk number, whether to pass into the wind, or to place a streamer in a more distant current vein, while maintaining a certain ease of movement, guaranteeing efficiency and precision. Moderately tip action, with a pleasant roundness that transitions to a powerful heel, this is a blank that gives great sensations when the line is lengthened.

Our recommended handles

Fly rod handles are first and foremost a matter of personal preference. This is where you have to listen to your hand and your instinct. Depending on the size and strength of his hands, and above all on his preferred way of holding the rod, the angler will opt for a half-wells handle (best for those who fish with the index finger above the grip) or a full-wells (best for those who whip with the thumb above).

For a long-range rod, it's wise to opt for a full-well, which allows for a powerful grip, always useful when fishing far away. The choice of material and reel seat is more a matter of taste: everyone can follow their own preferences.
