Nous avons reçu il y a peu de temps en Bretagne Sud deux guides de pêche basques renommés qui nous font l’honneur d’intégrer le Team Rodhouse.
We recently had the pleasure to have two renowned fishing guides from the French Basque country with us in Britanny. Their visit corresponded with their integration into the Rodhouse Team.

Ces deux-là représentent deux sociétés distinctes, mais travaillent en parfaite symbiose quand il s’agit d’accueillir des groupes, de découvrir de nouvelles zones, d’échanger des infos.
Ils sont donc très complémentaires et toujours au courant des zones ou se tient le poisson, ils pratiquent toutes sortes de pêches, du bar, du sar, merlus, congres, requins, et bien sur, les thons.
Those two passionate anglers run separate companie but work in complete synergy when it comes to taking groups out at sea, discovering new fishing zones or exchanging information. Information is key in their job and they always know where the fish are. Depending on season and conditions, they will take their clients out searching for a wide variety of species : Tuna is of course their specialty, but they know where to find sea bass, sea bream, shark, conger eel or hake.
C’est ce qui nous a fait nous rencontrer, il y a deux ans, quand nous avons découvert en leur compagnie la pêche du thon aux leurres sur chasse, en tant que clients à l’époque !
We got to meet them for a tuna fishing session a couple of years ago, as their customers at the time. We had great fun on that day, chasing after tunas that were hunting in shoals of anchovies.
C’est une pêche extraordinaire, vivante, qui permet de capturer plusieurs thons de 10 à 30 kilos et + lors de la même journée. Ce sont des combats intenses, puissants, parfois d’une dizaine de minutes, sur du matériel léger, sur des poissons teigneux et combatifs, très loin de l’ambiance salle de muscu et combats hors limite qu’opposent les très (trop ?) gros poissons.
It’s an extraordinary fishing experience. You can catch several 10-30kg tunas in a day, and those put up quite a fight. On light tackle, the fight can take up to 10 or 15 minutes and be very intense. Tunas are great fighters, but those smaller fish are actually much more fun than 200kg+ monsters.
Nous y sommes revenus plusieurs fois depuis, transformant même notre visite en rituel (mmm les petits Rioja des bars à tapas….) et en banc de test et développement pour martyriser certains blanks.
We went there several times since then, making it some kind of ritual with a few friends – and the great Rioja reds and local tapas are another excuse. It was also the opportunity for some torture tests for some of our blanks.
Nous y avons ainsi validé le Tuna Express R710 et même pêché des thons sur des blanks à bass ….
This is how we validated our TUNA EXPRESS R710 blank in real-world situations. We even caught some tuna on bass blank to see how much they could take.
L’idée d’une coopération entre Herri Fishing, Yakapecher et Rodhouse s’est ainsi naturellement imposée au fil des sorties, et c’est pourquoi nous avons organisé un match retour en terre Bretonne au début du mois de Novembre 2015 ..
The idea of a more professional partnership between Herri Fishing, Yakapecher and Rodhouse came up quite naturally. That’s why we organized the second leg of the game in Southern Britanny this November.
Il fallait que nous montrions à ces deux nouveaux guides du team Rodhouse de quelle manière nous pêchons le bar en Bretagne, les fameuse pêches en traction au shad dans les courants, que nous fassions un point sur le matériel dont ils auraient besoin la saison prochaine pour équiper les bateaux, et faire quelques rappels sur les techniques de montage, puisque Julien et Fabien monteront bien sur eux même le matériel mis à disposition de leurs clients.
We had to share some of our seabass fishing techniques with the two new members of our team, and more particularly our « drop and draw » technique in strong currents. We also had to discuss gear they would need in the year to come and to talk about some building techniques too. Of course, Julien and Fabien will build their own rods for their two boats.
Nous avons donc guidé les guides par un matin brumeux, au départ du port du Logeo, à destination de Houat et Hoedic.
We headed out to sea from Le Logeo in the Golfe du Morbihan on a foggy morning. Luckily enough, it didn’t last.
Après quelques dérives sur le Golfe du Morbihan, et déjà quelques poissons, Fabien mettra au sec le plus joli poisson de la session, un 70+, nous mettons ensuite rapidement le cap sur les iles du Ponant.
We caught the first fish in the Golfe. It was there that Fabien caught the best fish of the session, slightly over 70cm. After a few drifts, we head towards two of the beautiful Ponant Islands : Hoedic and Houat.
Là encore les poissons s’enchainent, les basques s’habituent très vite aux courants, on sent que ce sont des professionnels affutés de la pêche, la session nous permet également de valider des blanks et des retours d’expérience profitables pour tous.
The fish are there and our Basque buddies get used to the strong currents in no time. That’s when you can tell someone is really good. And they were good ! It’s also the opportunity for them to see what types of blanks they like and to share some experience.
Après cette super journée de pêche sur les iles, nous passerons une bonne soirée animée en compagnie de Thanh the Cook.
And after such a cool day of fishing around the islands, we spent a relaxed evening with our friend Thanh the Cook. Time for more talk !
La journée du lendemain se passe dans les locaux de Rodhouse, nous validons des cahiers des charges, ressortons des blanks utilisés la veille et d’autres, parfois plus adaptés au programme de nos copains basques. C’est aussi l’occasion de présenter l’équipe à Sainte Solenne, qui gère le stock et les expés de Rodhouse depuis maintenant deux ans.
The next day was spent in the Rodhouse premises. We validate the choices made the day before on the water and try to find the best compromise for each technique according to our friends’ tastes. It is also the opportunity for them to meet Solenne, who has been with Rodhouse for two years.
L’après midi est destiné au rodbuilding, Fabien est déjà un monteur aguerri qui monte des cannes en pro au sein de sa structure Herri Fishing-Herri Rod, et nous échangeons dans mon atelier perso des techniques de montages, vernis, ligature.
In the afternoon, we worked on rod building techniques. Fabien is already an experienced rod builder and has his own brand – Herri Rods. It was a good time to discuss builds, guides and resins.
On est vraiment très satisfaits à Rodhouse d’accueillir dans l’équipe ces deux excellents guides de pêche, pour info une des premières Tuna Express R710 a fini la saison chez Julien, qui l’a adoptée pour la saison prochaine.
We are really happy to welcome them in the team. They are two dedicated professionals and are truly passionate about what they do. One of the first TUNA EXPRESS R710 blanks was used by Julien at the end of the tuna season and he has already decided to keep it on board for the next season.
Nous partageons beaucoup de valeurs communes, liées à la convivialité, à la pêche sportive, nous sommes toujours en quête de pêches nouvelles et inédites, et très enthousiastes d’ouvrir cette nouvelle page de l’amitié entre pêcheurs basques et bretons.
Rodhouse, Yakapecher and Herri Fishing share a lot of common values : those of sports fishing in general, conviviality too. We are always on the hunt for new techniques, new fish to catch. For us, this is another story about the long-existing friendship that exists between Basque and Breton anglers.
